Cartmel Valley Game
Nestled in the picturesque historic Cartmel Valley, John and Susan Scott along with their dedicated staff have been running their successful game business for over 25 years supplying the best quality gourmet game and smoked products to over 100 top class establishments. With John being a former game keeper, it seemed a natural move starting small the business and reputation and grown beyond their belief over the last 25 years.
Before we opened, we knew we needed to find the best local produce the area had to offer and were also keen to support local trades and keep our green credentials by sourcing produce with in a small radius.
As a Bed & Breakfast we were determined that our guests were served with an award-winning breakfast each day. We have always believed that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and regardless of whether you are opting for our delicious full English of a lighter option of homemade drop scones it all needed to be freshly cooked to order rather than the norm in larger establishments where it sits under warming lights for ages.
Living in the Lake District meant that the traditional Cumberland sausage was the sausage of choice. With so many suppliers to choose from I decided that the best way to decide was to ask the preferred suppliers to supply enough sausages so I could feed the army of 12 hungry builders plus 4 family members we had living on site during the initial restoration and we would vote on which was the best sausage/ bacon and black pudding during blind testing.
To be honest a couple of suppliers were only prepared to supply 2 sausages! Not much use for a descent trial/ test. John from Cartmel Valley Games though this was really amusing and sent loads of samples enough for dinner and sandwiches!!
The outright winner for sausages/ bacon and black pudding was Cartmel Valley Game. John the owner came highly recommended and only supplies high end establishments, so I was delighted when he agreed to supply us as well. Our back bacon is specially sliced for us as a thick cut or as Michael Roux Junior said after eating our breakfast “proper thickly sliced” bacon.
The only issue we have is when guests want crispy bacon as ours is almost impossible to crisp due to the nature of its cut.
We have used John since opening he phones each Monday for Tuesdays delivery and Thursday for Fridays delivery. He’s always so cheerful in times of severe weather he comes out personally in his all-terrain land rover to make sure we get our delivery.
